http://www.tweaktown.com Today we attended a ViewSonic press conference in Taipei where the company used the event to launch a range of new eBook e-readers appropriately held at the eslite bookstore.
Next up Mike Chen, a ViewSonic product manager for its digital media business unit, introduces the special editor VEB632 JinYong Reader e-reader that is at the top-end of ViewSonic’s new eBook range. It will go on sale in Taiwan in July with a rather rich street price of 14,800 NTD or around 462 USD at today’s rate.
Yin Yong is a very famous Chinese martial arts novelist who has written some 36 books on the ancient Eastern fighting art that are enjoyed by Chinese all around the world. The VEB632 e-reader comes bundled with all of Jin Yong’s books included on the 2GB of internal storage. The e-reader sports a six-inch e-ink display that supports an 800 x 600 resolution with up to 16 levels of grey. This model is slightly bigger and heavier than the previous VEB620 model we looked at, but it comes in at a still quite nimble and comfortable 250 grams or around 9 ounces. Distributed by Tubemogul.

I also have a Sony PRS-700 and the Kindle DX is waaaay easier to read. Too much glass reflection on the Sony. The size of the DX works better for me. The DX user interface, on the other hand, is not as good as Sony’s and I miss the touch-screen. The kindle hardware, also, looks and in fact IS fragile. I already broke one DX and I’m very carefull with my gadgets. But, as a whole, it is the best eReader on the market.

Kindle 2 Review: Whispernet Demonstration

I couldn`t find any reviews showing what the Kindle`s whispernet is like. So I made one!
I live in Japan, so the connection speed might be a bit different but I think this gives you a good idea of what it`s like to use. Hope somebody finds this useful.
For the record I have nothing against the iphone/ipad. If I wanted to do anything more than reading/email on a train I would have bought one of them instead. Also I chose the kindle 2 partly because it works out about 4 times cheaper than a 2 year iphone/ipad internet connection.

This is the first 6″ e-reader with a capacitative touch screen, it enables it to be much more compact than the Kindle as text input can be done on the touch screen. Although this is an early prototype demonstrated by Sagem Wireless at Mobile World Congress. The feature of using a capacitative touch screen on the e-reader does not remove from the readability of the screen and allows for finger touch screen input through the interfaces. A capacitative stylus input may also be supported. This device will include 3G and WiFi wireless data modems.
