Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE) has launched three new e-book readers to compete with Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad and Amazon.com, Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle.
Sony’s three new e-readers will only be available in the US. The Pocket Edition is equipped with a 5-inch screen with a display much like the Kindle, and is priced at $179.99.
The Touch Edition has a 6-inch screen, a higher display and memory card slots, and is priced at $229.99. The Daily Edition allows users to download books via Wi-Fi and the AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) 3G phone network, reports the Telegraph. The Daily Edition also boasts a slimmer frame, upped battery life and more storage at the price of $299.99.
Steve Haber, president of Sony’s digital reading unit said, “Lowering prices to get cheaper and cheaper is not our direction, Our plan is not to race to the bottom.”
The Kindle 3G costs about $189 and a 16GB Wi-Fi iPad costs $499.

The Amazon Kindle and the iPad from Apple – which one is the best?
1. If you want a multi-purpose device then iPad is the right choice for you. No need to read the rest of the post.
2. If you will be reading less than a book a month then the iPad is definitely the better choice.
3. If you want a dedicated eReader than the Kindle is better — read the post and see the pros and cons.
4. If price is an issue then the $259 Kindle is the clear choice.

Choose your ebook
The nice thing about eReaders is they allow you to carry a large library of reading material in a package weighing less than a single book.
The next item to consider is whether you want your eReader to allow you to download eBooks wirelessly at any time.
If you do, then you definitely want to consider the Kindle, Nook, and potentially the iPad.
If you do not, or do not care, then you can optionally consider the Sony Digital Readers as well.
The Sony eReaders do not have any type of wireless connection built in, meaning you have to sync your books from your PC.
The screen type is the first important thing to choose.
Of the bunch, the Apple iPad is the only one that has a full color screen.
It is the fastest to refresh and has the greatest resolution of the bunch.
If you’re considering an eReader with an e-ink screen (such as the Kindle, Nook, or Digital Reader), you will want to take into account the screen size.
If you’re looking for a multi-function device, you should definitely look closely at the Apple iPad.
Because of its hardware and screen, it has the ability to perform a number of functions typically not handled by eReaders: Music, Videos, Pictures, Audiobooks, Graphical Web Browsing.

In this episode of D3Live I compare the third generation Amazon Kindle against the Barnes and Noble Nook and the Apple iPad to help you decide which is the best ereader available. Starting at $139 the Amazon Kindle 3 Wi-Fi model is undoubtedly a great price for a very solid product. The Barnes and Noble Nook also has a lot going for it for only $149 for the Wi-Fi only model as it contains both a standard E-Ink display as well as a 3.5 inch color touch screen. Lastly there is the Apple iPad which while it starts at $499 for the Wi-Fi only variant there’s no doubt it does much more than an ordinary ereader. Be sure to watch the full video to find out which is the best ereader.
D3Live is a weekly show I do live every Saturday at 3PM Eastern time live on BlogTV. If you are interested in asking me questions for the video or just watching the show live keep an eye out as I will post a video here on YouTube before I begin. http://www.blogtv.com/people/duncan33303

With Apple’s iPad hitting the market in a matter of days, how big an impact will the computer giant’s entrance into the tablet and eReader business make? A huge one, according to several research firms such as eMarketer, Yankee Group and Credit Suisse. Amazon’s eBook market share is going to shrink, shrink, shrink over the next few years; there will be formidable new competitors coming aboard (hint: a big search engine!), and consumers will be buying eReaders by the bushel. For all the numbers and how the market shakes out, tune into Daisy Whitney’s New Media Minute this week where she shares a first look at some of the early data on this red hot market. You’ll also learn how the beleaguered magazine and newspaper industries will fare on tablets.

Twitter – http://www.twitter.com/thetimtracker I really enjoy watching daily vlogs from YouTube stars like CTFxC ( CharlesTrippy ), SHAYTARDS, LisaNova, KassemG, and iJustine; so I decided to do my own! I make a video everyday. If you like this one be sure to check out all the rest, and subscribe for future videos. I went to the apple store to actually put my hands on a real life apple ipad, so i could give my review a little credibility. It is a pretty neat little device, but I think I am still trying to compare the ipad to something that it is not. I want it to do more! Like a super light easy to use thin little lap top. Instead I should be looking at it to bridge the gap between the function of a lap top and the function of an iphone. Almost like a super cool sleek net book. It got me so worked up that I decided to have a game night at my house followed by a quick back and neck adjustment by a friend of mine that is a chiropractor.
