No, there isn’t any ebook reader that work across store. There is only the Nook that works in Barnes and Noble store, but if you’ve the time to go to the store, you can read all physical books for free already. The point of ebook reader is that it allows you to carry all your favorite books and read anywhere you like.

BTW, Amazon just released a new Kindle and it is much better. I’ve given a detailed comparison between the Nook, the Sony Reader, and the new Kindle, in another answer here (I’ve also mentioned where to get free books in the answer). Guess you’ll find interested:

And if you’re getting the Kindle, my advice for you is to place the order as soon as possible so to ensure it arrives to you early. The first batch has just sold out and the second batch now deliver on or before 17th Sept. When the second batch get out of stock, it may take another month for it to be back in stock, and you’ll have to wait much longer.

Sony’s three new e-readers will only be available in the US. The Pocket Edition is equipped with a 5-inch screen with a display much like the Kindle, and is priced at $179.99.
The Touch Edition has a 6-inch screen, a higher display and memory card slots, and is priced at $229.99. The Daily Edition allows users to download books via Wi-Fi and the AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) 3G phone network, reports the Telegraph. The Daily Edition also boasts a slimmer frame, upped battery life and more storage at the price of $299.99.

Steve Haber, president of Sony’s digital reading unit said, “Lowering prices to get cheaper and cheaper is not our direction, Our plan is not to race to the bottom.”

The Kindle 3G costs about $189 and a 16GB Wi-Fi iPad costs $499.

Books out of copyright (before 1923) are free. Books that the author gives permission for the book to be free (very seldom happens). Otherwise you must buy their ebook. It is usually cheaper than the hardcover.

I’ve read and searched this online, but can’t seem to find really good answers/comparisons.

I had initially had my sights set on the Nook, but now that the new Kindle is out, I’m not sure which one I’d like. I’m also open to suggestions of other/unknown brands that make good eReaders.

I’d like:
- A large library of books available.
- 3G and WiFi capability (preferable)
- Light-weight/small.
- Reasonably priced.

I may consider the iPad, but that’s on the higher end of the budget, and it seems too big to carry around. What do you think?
